Alphas Against AIDS 2010

Location:St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Brooklyn NY
Date: May 19th, 2010

On May 19, 2010 the Brothers of Kappa Xi Lambda in conjunction with the Delta Rho Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha held The Alphas Against AIDS Program at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church located at 259 Washington Avenue in Brooklyn in an effort to educate and advocate for our communities.

The program officially started when DRO Soror Karen St. Hilaire welcomed the crowd followed by Reverend Aguilar, Pastor at St. Luke’s, who offered opening remarks and a prayer. Soror Sabrina Gates facilitated an icebreaker designed to offer participant’s perspective on how fast the disease can spread in our community. Tony Thompson of Kappa Xi Lambda chapter then introduced our moderator, Claire Simon of the Women’s HIV Collaborative. The panelists were introduced and each gave a brief talk about their work in this arena. The diversity of the panel provided a thoroughly engaging discussion. The group included an outreach coordinator, Ms. Chatura Smith; Dr. Diana Williams, a medical doctor working closely on this issue; two infected individuals involved in advocacy and awareness work Ms. Thea Golden an Outreach Worker for Life Force, Women Fighting AIDS, inc., and Mr. David Long, an addiction counselor at Community Health Action of Staten Island; and a clinical psychotherapist Dr. Chris Johnson of GMAD (Gay Men of African Descent).

The panel discussed various questions posed to them by our moderator and a sizeable portion of the program was left open to audience participation. Questions that made for a lively discussion included: Are we close to a cure? If not, is that by design? Why are African Americans and people of color so disproportionately affected by this epidemic? Are today's prevention measures working? If so many individuals know how to protect themselves, why does the disease continue to grow at such an alarming rate? An increasing number of seniors are contracting the disease, what outreach is being done to this group? How are other nations responding to the AIDS epidemic? Are other nations better, worse or equal as compared to US efforts? Does HIV/AIDS as a social and as a health problem seem less significant today than yesterday? What can we do as individuals or as a collective to help prevent the spread of the disease and to advocate for more research for finding a cure?

Alphas Against AIDS Weekend

Location: Various
Date: May 17th-18th, 2008

The weekend of May 17th –18th 2008 marked the first of what is hoped to be the annual “Alphas Against AIDS” weekend. On Saturday, Kappa Xi Lambda partnered with Life Force, an HIV testing and counseling center in Brooklyn, to sponsor an AIDS education and testing forum at the Life Force office. For over a decade Life Force has been a leader in the Brooklyn community in helping to reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS, particularly in women, through education and support services, and empowering women to make healthy choices. The day was divided into two 2 hour sessions.

In each session the Life Force coordinator, Thomasina Stallings, spoke about the organization and how they contribute to the community. Then the audience watched an educational video, which spoke to different attitudes toward sexual behavior, which contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS. The highlight of each session was the presentations from T.H.E.O. (Teens Helping Each Other.) THEO is a group of peer educators who use dramatic skits and hip hop to inform other young people about the dangers of unprotected sex. One of the most important parts of the day was the opportunity to receive confidential HIV testing and by the end of the day 10 people were tested. On Sunday, May 18th, we continued our fight against AIDS by participating in the 22nd Annual AIDS Walk NY for the first time as a chapter.

March for Babies

Location: Lincoln Center
Date: April 27, 2008

It’s that time of year again...Walk America, the walk that has been saving babies for more than 30 years, is now MARCH FOR BABIES! For years the March of Dimes and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have been raising money through walk-a-thons and through solicitations so that we can fight for the health of our prematurely-born babies. Here are some startling statistics…did you know that a premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death in the first month of life? It affects 1,305 babies a day in the United States.

Those who survive may have lifelong health problems. Did you know that in the United States, prematurity and low birth weights are the second leading causes of ALL infant deaths (during the first year of life) and the leading cause of infant death among black infants? That is why I am asking you to support the 2008 MARCH FOR BABIES walk on April 27th, 2008 at 9:30 AM, starting from Lincoln Center (62nd Street & Columbus Avenue, New York, NY).

Kappa Xi Lambda Chapter “The Wall Street Alphas ”has teamed up with the 2008 March for Babies team to support this great cause by soliciting donations and by walking. Donations can be made via our chapter website or through any of the brothers’ websites. Any donation amount will help this most important cause. If your company has a “donor matching program”, this will double the donation and get us closer to saving our babies. The March of Dimes is leading the way to find answers by supporting research, advocacy and educational programs that focus on the causes of premature birth.
